The Castle Gate

Come in!Not today!
Ages 6โ€“1210โ€“15 min3 or more players (4 to 6 is best)Nothing๐Ÿ™‚ MediumSiblings can play aloneMedium noiseNo messZero prep
๐ŸŽฏ Your mission

A castle guard only lets you in if you walk through the gate in a secret way. Figure out the secret rule before anyone else!

๐Ÿšฆ Get ready
  1. Pick one player to be the Gate Keeper.
  2. Use a doorway as the castle gate, or mark two spots on the floor.
  3. Everyone else lines up a few steps from the gate.
  4. The Gate Keeper secretly picks a Secret Rule from the list below, or makes up a simple one. They tell nobody.
Secret Rule ideas
  • Hop through on one foot
  • Walk through backward
  • Go through with both hands on your head
  • Say an animal name as you step through
  • Go through with your eyes closed
  • Spin around once as you pass through
  • Tiptoe through
Tip for the Gate Keeper

Pick a rule about how you move or what you say, so everyone can see it.

๐Ÿ‘ฃ How to play
  1. One at a time, each player tries to go through the gate any way they like.
  2. The Gate Keeper says only one of two things: "Come in!" if you followed the secret rule, or "Not today!" if you didn't.
  3. After your try, go to the end of the line. Watch the other players carefully. Their tries will teach you something!
  4. When you think you know the rule, wait for your turn and say "I know the rule!" Then whisper it to the Gate Keeper.
  5. Right? You win! You become the next Gate Keeper.
  6. Wrong? The Gate Keeper says "Not that rule." You can guess only 2 times in the whole game.
Gate Keeper rules
  • Be fair. The rule can't change in the middle of the game.
  • If a player follows the secret rule and also does other silly things, they still get "Come in!"
  • If nobody has guessed after everyone has had 4 tries, give one hint.
๐Ÿ† How do you win?

The first player to say the correct secret rule wins.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Example

Max is the Gate Keeper. His secret rule: hold your nose. Lila walks through normally. "Not today!" Noor hops through. "Not today!" Ben goes through with his hands on his head. "Not today!" Lila tries again and scratches her nose. "Not today!" Then Noor holds her nose while hopping. "Come in!" Noor thinks, "It's not the hopping... it's the nose!" On her next turn she says, "I know the rule! You have to hold your nose." Max says, "Yes!" Noor wins and becomes the next Gate Keeper.

๐ŸŒฑ Make it easier (ages 6โ€“7)

Play a practice round first with an easy rule, like "say a color." Give a hint after 2 tries each.

๐Ÿš€ Make it harder

Use a rule with two parts, like "hop AND say a fruit."

๐Ÿ’› Mom note

Be the first Gate Keeper so they see how it works. Kids pick it up fast.

The Silent Heist

z z๐Ÿคซ
Ages 5โ€“1210โ€“15 min3 or more players (4 to 6 is best)One rolled-up sock๐Ÿ™‚ MediumSiblings can play aloneQuietNo messZero prep
๐ŸŽฏ Your mission

Sneak across the room and steal the diamond without the Guard hearing you.

๐Ÿงฐ What you need

One sock, rolled into a ball. This is the diamond.

๐Ÿšฆ Get ready
  1. Pick one player to be the Guard. Everyone else is a Thief.
  2. The Guard sits on the floor in the middle of the room with eyes closed. The diamond sits on the floor right in front of their feet.
  3. The Thieves stand against the walls, as far from the Guard as possible.
  4. Move anything that could trip someone.
๐Ÿ‘ฃ How to play
  1. The Guard says "Go!" and the Thieves tiptoe toward the diamond.
  2. If the Guard hears a sound, they point toward it and say "Gotcha!"
  3. Pointed at a Thief? That Thief walks back to the wall and starts again.
  4. Pointed at nothing? Oops! Every Thief takes one free step closer.
  5. A Thief who grabs the diamond must carry it all the way back to a wall. If the Guard points at that Thief, the diamond goes back in the middle and the Thief returns to the wall.
  6. The Guard keeps their eyes closed the whole time and does not touch the diamond.
๐Ÿ† How do you win?

The first Thief to get the diamond to a wall wins. That Thief is the next Guard.

๐Ÿ‘ฃ Rules
  • Walk only. No running.
  • The Guard can point as many times as they like. But every wrong point gives the Thieves a free step.
๐Ÿ’ฌ Example

Leo is the Guard. Sam's foot squeaks on the floor. Leo points at Sam: "Gotcha!" Sam walks back to the wall. Then Leo hears a creak by the door and points there. Nobody is there! Mia, Sam, and Noor each take a free step. Noor creeps up, grabs the diamond, and tiptoes to the wall. Leo points the wrong way. Noor wins and becomes the next Guard.

๐ŸŒฑ Make it easier (ages 5โ€“6)

Let the Thieves start closer to the diamond.

๐Ÿš€ Make it harder

Use two diamonds. The Thieves have to steal both before anyone wins.

๐Ÿ›Ÿ Safety

Keep the floor clear. Everyone moves slowly so nobody bumps into the Guard.

๐Ÿ’› Mom note

Be the first Guard so they see how it works. Listen carefully, because kids get very good at being quiet.

Lava Couriers

WAREHOUSE๐Ÿงธ๐Ÿงธ๐ŸงธDELIVERY DOOR๐Ÿงบ
Ages 5โ€“1210โ€“15 min2 to 4 playersCushions + stuffed animalsโšก HighSiblings can play aloneMedium noiseSmall messTwo minutes prep
๐ŸŽฏ Your mission

The floor is lava! Deliver all three packages from the Warehouse to the Delivery Door by stepping only on cushion islands. Can you finish before the timer rings?

๐Ÿงฐ What you need
  • 6 cushions or big pillows (the islands)
  • 3 stuffed animals (the packages)
  • A towel or blanket (the Warehouse)
  • A laundry basket (the Delivery Door)
  • A timer
๐Ÿšฆ Get ready
  1. Pick a room with a rug or carpet. Cushions can slide on bare wood or tile, so skip those floors.
  2. Lay the towel at one end and put the 3 stuffed animals on it. This is the Warehouse.
  3. Put the basket at the other end, about 8 big steps away. This is the Delivery Door.
  4. Lay the 6 cushions on the floor in between, about one step apart.
  5. Pick one player to be the Courier. Everyone else is the Cheer Squad. Take turns after each delivery.
๐Ÿ‘ฃ How to play
  1. Set the timer for 3 minutes.
  2. The Courier picks up ONE package and hugs it to their chest.
  3. Cross the lava by stepping only on the cushions. A foot on the floor means the lava got you!
  4. You can move a cushion forward, but you may only pick one up while you are standing on a different one.
  5. Drop the package in the basket, then go back for the next one.
  6. If a foot touches the floor, the package goes back to the Warehouse. Start that trip again.
๐Ÿ† How do you win?

Deliver all 3 packages before the timer rings. It is a team game, so every delivery counts for everyone.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Example

Ava stands on cushion 2. She reaches back, picks up cushion 1, and lays it down in front of her. She steps forward and the lava can't touch her. She drops the first package in the basket with 2 minutes left. Her brother cheers, then it's his turn to carry.

๐ŸŒฑ Make it easier (ages 5โ€“6)

Put the cushions closer together and give the Couriers 5 minutes.

๐Ÿš€ Make it harder (ages 9โ€“12)

Use only 4 cushions. Or choose an older sibling to be the Lava Boss. After every delivery, the Lava Boss takes one cushion away.

๐Ÿ›Ÿ Safety

Walk, don't jump. Play barefoot or in grippy socks. Never stand on furniture. Keep the path clear of toys.

๐Ÿ’› Mom note

You only need to start the timer. If you want to join in, be the Lava Boss and take cushions away dramatically.

Storm Shelter

๐Ÿงธ Storm Line
Ages 4โ€“1020โ€“30 min2 or more (the Builders, plus one Storm)Household itemsโšก HighA Storm player needed (grown-up or older sibling)Medium noiseBig messTwo minutes prep
๐ŸŽฏ Your mission

Build a shelter to protect your Chief from a big sock storm. Can your shelter keep the Chief dry?

๐Ÿงฐ What you need
  • 1 stuffed animal. This is the Chief.
  • Cushions, blankets, chairs, a table, whatever you can build with safely
  • 10 socks, rolled into balls. These are the hailstones.
  • A shoe or tape for the Storm Line
๐Ÿšฆ Get ready
  1. Put the Chief on the floor.
  2. Put the Storm Line 3 big steps away from the Chief.
  3. One player is the Storm. Everyone else is a Builder.
๐Ÿ‘ฃ How to play
  1. Build! The Builders have 8 minutes to build a shelter around the Chief. The shelter needs a roof and a wall facing the Storm.
  2. When time is up, the Builders step to the side.
  3. The Storm stands at the Storm Line and throws the 10 hailstones, one at a time, underhand, toward the shelter.
  4. Every hailstone that touches the Chief counts as 1 Wet Spot. Hailstones that hit the shelter are stopped, so they don't count.
  5. After the last hailstone, count the Wet Spots:
    • 0 or 1: Storm Proof! โญ
    • 2 to 4: A Few Leaks.
    • 5 or more: Washed Away!
  6. Round 2: The Builders get 3 minutes to fix their shelter, then the Storm throws again. Can you get fewer Wet Spots?
๐Ÿ† How do you win?

It's a team game. You win when your shelter is Storm Proof.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Example

Ava and Leo build a shelter with a table, a blanket roof, and cushions in front. Mom is the Storm. She throws 10 socks. Two sneak through a gap at the corner and hit the Chief. "A Few Leaks!" Ava stuffs a pillow in the gap and they try again. This time: 0 Wet Spots. Storm Proof!

๐Ÿš€ Make it harder

Give the Builders only 5 minutes. Or the Storm throws from two different sides.

๐Ÿ›Ÿ Safety

Soft socks only, thrown underhand and gently. Never throw at a person. Don't put anything heavy on the roof. Don't build under shelves or climb on furniture. Use only stable chairs.

๐Ÿ’› Mom note

You only need to throw socks for a few minutes. Plan on a big mess to clean up afterward. Ask the Builders to put the pillows back as part of the game.

Human Remote Control

BEEP Forward 3!
Ages 5โ€“105โ€“10 min2 players (3+ take turns)Nothing๐Ÿ™‚ MediumSiblings can play alone (grown-up nearby for ages 5โ€“6)QuietNo messZero prep
๐ŸŽฏ Your mission

One of you is a robot with closed eyes. The other is the Remote Control. Guide the robot to the target without a single bump.

๐Ÿšฆ Get ready
  1. Pick a target in a clear room: the couch, a pillow on the floor, or the door.
  2. Move anything the robot could trip on (shoes, toys, bags).
  3. The Robot stands at the far end with eyes closed, hands by their sides. The Remote Control stands next to them.
The only commands you can use
  • "Step forward" (or "Forward 3" for three steps)
  • "Step back"
  • "Turn left"
  • "Turn right"
  • "Stop!"
๐Ÿ‘ฃ How to play
  1. The Remote Control gives one command at a time.
  2. The Robot does exactly what it says, slowly. Robots never run.
  3. The Remote Control may not touch the robot.
  4. If the Robot is about to bump something, the Remote Control must say "Stop!"
  5. When the Robot reaches out and touches the target, the mission is complete.
  6. Count how many commands the Remote Control used. Then switch roles.
๐Ÿ† How do you win?

You both win when the Robot touches the target. Next round, try to use fewer commands.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Example

Tali is the Robot and stands at the door with her eyes closed. Sam says, "Forward 3." Tali takes 3 slow steps. "Turn right." "Forward 2." "Stop." Tali reaches out and touches the couch. Sam used 4 commands. Now they switch.

๐Ÿš€ Make it harder

Move the target to another room. Or use only 3 commands in total.

๐Ÿ›Ÿ Safety

Play in a clear room, away from stairs and sharp corners. The Robot always walks slowly. If the Robot feels unsure, they can open their eyes.

๐Ÿ’› Mom note

It's good for siblings who fight over who's the boss. Everyone gets a turn at being the boss and a turn at doing what they're told.

Sibling Rescue Missions

โ„น๏ธ Use this when

The kids are fighting and you need them on the same team. Pick one mission. In every one of them, both of them are needed to win. There is no loser.

For a big age gap: The older child is the Helper (they do the heavy lifting). The younger child is the Captain (they give the orders and count down).

1. Back-to-back stand-up

Sit on the floor with your backs touching and your elbows linked. Stand up together without using your hands on the floor.

You win when you are both standing for 3 seconds. Tip: push back against each other as you rise. The Captain counts "1, 2, 3, UP!"

2. The pillow walk

Put a pillow between your backs. Walk sideways together from one wall to the other. No hands allowed.

You win when you reach the wall. If the pillow drops, start again from the beginning.

Oncea pickle

3. The one-word story

Make up a story together, one word at a time. You say one word, then your sibling says the next word, and so on.

You win when you finish a story that makes sense, is exactly 20 words long, and ends with "THE END." Count your words together.

4. Mirror mission

Face each other. One of you is the Leader and moves slowly. The other is the Mirror and copies every move at the same time. If the Mirror falls behind, the Leader says "Lag!"

You win if you get through 30 seconds with fewer than 3 Lags. Then swap.

๐Ÿช

5. Two-person statue

Make a statue of an animal that needs two bodies, like a camel, a dragon, an octopus, or a giant robot.

You win when your statue stays still for 10 seconds.

๐Ÿ† When you are done

High-five!

๐Ÿ’› Mom note

Don't ask who started it. Just hand them the card and say "Pick a mission." Most of the time, the mood changes before the second one.

Only Questions

โ“
Ages 8โ€“13+5 min2 players (or a circle of 3+)Nothing๐Ÿ™‚ MediumSiblings can play aloneQuietNo messZero prep
๐ŸŽฏ Your mission

Have a whole conversation using only questions. The first person to slip up loses the round.

๐Ÿšฆ Get ready

Face each other. Pick a silly scene. For example:

  • You're two chefs and the kitchen is on fire.
  • You're two astronauts and you lost your spaceship.
  • You just found a dinosaur in the garden.

Decide who goes first.

๐Ÿ‘ฃ How to play
  1. Player 1 asks a question about the scene: "Why is there smoke coming from the oven?"
  2. Player 2 answers with another question: "Did you leave the pizza in too long?"
  3. Keep going back and forth, as fast as you can.
  4. You lose the round if you:
    • say anything that isn't a question,
    • wait longer than 3 seconds, or
    • repeat a question that was already asked.
  5. The other player gets 1 point.
๐Ÿ† How do you win?

First to 3 points wins. Then pick a new scene and play again.

Group version (3+ players)

Stand in a circle. Questions go around the circle. If you slip, you're out until the next round. The last player left wins.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Example round

Mia: "Why is there smoke?" Ben: "Did you forget the pizza?" Mia: "How could I forget with all that noise?" Ben: "Who is making all that noise?" Mia: "Isn't it obviously your fault?" Ben: "I don't think so." Ben said a statement, not a question. Mia gets 1 point.

๐ŸŒฑ Make it easier (ages 8โ€“9)

Give each other 5 seconds instead of 3.

๐Ÿš€ Make it harder

Every question has to be at least 5 words long.

๐Ÿ’› Mom note

It's a great one for the car or a waiting room. Play it with them. Kids usually beat their parents, and they love that.

The Great Count

๐Ÿ”ข
Ages 6โ€“125โ€“10 min3 or more players (4 to 6 is best)Nothing๐Ÿง˜ CalmSiblings can play aloneQuietNo messZero prep
๐ŸŽฏ Your mission

Count from 1 to 20 together. Sounds easy! But everyone has to take turns with no order, no signals, and no two people talking at once.

๐Ÿšฆ Get ready

Sit or stand in a circle so you can see each other's faces.

๐Ÿ‘ฃ The rules
  • Anyone can say the next number at any time. There's no order.
  • No pointing, no nodding, no whispering a plan.
  • You can't say two numbers in a row yourself. Someone else has to go in between.
  • If two people say a number at the same time, shout "Oops!" and start again from 1.
๐Ÿ‘ฃ How to play
  1. Anyone says "1."
  2. Someone else says "2."
  3. Keep going. Take your time. Wait if you're not sure.
  4. If you reach 20 without an "Oops!", everyone cheers.
๐Ÿ† How do you win?

You all win together when you reach 20. Count how many tries it took. Next time, try to do it in fewer.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Example

Ava says 1. Noah says 2. Mia says 3. Ava says 4. Nobody speaks for a moment. Noah and Mia both say 5 at the same time. "Oops!" They start again from 1.

๐ŸŒฑ Make it easier (ages 5โ€“6)

Count to 10.

๐Ÿš€ Make it harder

Close your eyes. Or count to 30.

๐Ÿ’› Mom note

Grown-ups should play too. It's harder than it looks, and kids love it when Mom messes up. Expect lots of "Oops!" That's part of the fun.

Sneaky Word Story

๐Ÿ•ต๏ธ
Ages 7โ€“1310โ€“15 min3 or more players (2 can play, see below)Nothing๐Ÿ™‚ MediumSiblings can play aloneQuietNo messZero prep
๐ŸŽฏ Your mission

Tell a story together, one sentence at a time. Each of you has a secret word to sneak into the story. Can the others catch you?

๐Ÿšฆ Get ready
  1. Each player whispers a secret word to the player on their left. So everyone gets a word from someone else.
  2. Pick silly, everyday words: spoon, volcano, pickle, grandma, bicycle, banana.
  3. Pick a story starter from the list below.
Story starters
  • "One night, a goat walked into the library."
  • "At midnight, Grandma's refrigerator started to talk."
  • "The new kid at school had a very strange pet."
๐Ÿ‘ฃ How to play
  1. Go around the circle. Each player adds one sentence to the story.
  2. On your turn, add a sentence that fits the story. You must sneak in your secret word before the story ends. You can wait for the right moment.
  3. If you think someone just slipped in their secret word, shout "SNEAKY!" and guess the word. Each player may call "Sneaky!" only twice per game.
    • Right guess: the catcher gets 1 point.
    • Wrong guess: nothing happens, and the story keeps going.
  4. If you get your word into the story and nobody catches it, you get 1 point.
  5. The story ends when everyone has used their word, or after everyone has had 3 turns.
๐Ÿ† How do you win?

The player with the most points wins.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Example

Nia's secret word is "pickle." The story starts: "One night, a goat walked into the library." Omar adds: "He asked the librarian for a book about space." Nia adds: "She said it was on the top shelf, right next to the pickle jar." Omar shouts, "SNEAKY! Pickle!" He's right. Omar gets 1 point.

Playing with 2 players

Each player gets two secret words from the other player.

๐ŸŒฑ Make it easier (ages 7โ€“8)

No calling "Sneaky!" Instead, everyone guesses the secret words at the end.

๐Ÿš€ Make it harder

Use a weird word, like "toothbrush" or "elevator." Or sneak in two words.

๐Ÿ’› Mom note

Mom can play. If you forget your word, quietly ask the person who gave it to you.

Questions

What if my kids are different ages?

Every game has an easier version for younger kids and a harder version for older ones, so everyone can play together. Siblings with a big age gap can use the Helper and Captain jobs in the sibling missions.

Do we need any supplies?

Most games need nothing, or things you already have, like socks, cushions, and paper.

How many players do we need?

Each card shows the number of players. Many work with just two kids, and several get better with more.

Can I print a game?

Yes. Tap "Print this game" at the bottom of any card.
