Go on an adventure through 6 doors. A coin decides what you meet. Reach the treasure room with at least one heart left!

🧰 What you need

A sheet of paper, a pencil, and any coin.

🚦 Get ready
  1. Draw 3 hearts at the top of your paper. These are your lives.
  2. Draw a row of 6 doors across the middle. Number them 1 to 6.
  3. Draw an empty box at the bottom and write "MY BAG" on it.
  4. Pick your quest:
    • Find the dragon's treasure
    • Rescue a puppy from the haunted castle
    • Find the key that fell off the moon

  1. Stand at Door 1 and flip the coin.
  2. HEADS = a lucky find. Say out loud what you found, and draw it in your Bag. A flashlight, a map, a friendly bat, a magic spoon. Anything you like.
  3. TAILS = danger! A monster, a trap, or a storm shows up. Say what it is out loud. Then pick one:
    • Lose 1 heart (cross out a heart), or
    • Use an item from your Bag to beat it. Cross the item out. Each item works only once. Say how it saves you!
  4. Move to the next door and flip again.
  5. Door 6 is the Boss. The Boss guards the treasure. Flip the coin. Heads: you win! Tails: you need to use 2 items from your Bag to beat the Boss. If you don't have 2 items, you lose a heart and flip again.

You open the treasure (you win!), or you lose your last heart (the monsters win this time, and you try a new quest).

Your score

The number of hearts you have left when you win. 3 hearts is a perfect quest.

Kai picks "rescue the puppy from the haunted castle." Door 1: heads. He finds a flashlight and draws it in his Bag. Door 2: tails! A ghost floats out. "The ghost hates bright light!" Kai crosses out the flashlight. Door 3: tails! A trapdoor opens. His Bag is empty, so he loses a heart. Door 4: heads. He finds a magic key. And so on, until Door 6.

Paper, a pencil or crayons, and one small treasure. A small toy or a toy coin works.

You make a treasure map of a room, hide a treasure, and then someone else follows your map to find it.

πŸ‘£ How to play
  1. Pick a room and tell a grown-up which one. (So nobody hides treasure in a room that's off limits.) Pick your treasure.
  2. Draw the room as if you were a bird looking down from the ceiling. Draw the door, the couch, the table, and the bed as boxes.
  3. Hide your treasure somewhere safe. Pick a spot on the floor or on a low shelf. Never hide it somewhere you have to climb to reach.
  4. On your map, draw a dotted line from the door to the hiding spot. Put a big X where the treasure is.
  5. Add at least one funny landmark, like "Dragon Couch" or "Giant Pillow Mountain."
  6. Fold your map and give it to your sibling, Mom, or Dad. They follow the dotted line to find the treasure!
Stuck rule

If the treasure hunter can't find it, you may give them one hint.

The Five-Car Bridge

  • 2 stacks of books, each about as tall as your hand
  • 5 small toy cars
  • 6 sheets of paper (old homework or printer paper)
  • Tape
πŸ’‘ The idea

You build a paper bridge strong enough to hold 5 toy cars. Flat paper will bend, so you have to be clever.

🚦 Get ready

Put the two stacks of books on a table. Leave a gap between them that's as long as one sheet of paper (the long side). The bridge has to cross the gap and rest on both stacks.

πŸ‘£ How to play
  1. Build a bridge using only paper and tape. No books or other things under the bridge, only on the two ends.
  2. Put one car in the middle of the bridge. Does it hold? Great.
  3. Add another car. Then another. Keep going until there are 5 cars on the bridge at the same time.
  4. Count out loud to 5 seconds. If the bridge is still standing, you win!
If your bridge falls

That's part of the game. Look at where it bent. Fix that spot and try again.

Stuck? Try these tricks
  • Fold a sheet of paper back and forth like an accordion. It becomes much stronger.
  • Roll a sheet into a tube and tape it. Tubes are strong too.

Invent your own tiny country. You are the ruler! Make everything about it, then give a welcome speech.

Make these 7 things
  1. A name for your country. The funnier, the better.
  2. A flag. Draw it and explain what each color and symbol means.
  3. A map. Draw your country with at least 3 places: a mountain, a city, and a lake.
  4. A national animal. Invent an animal that lives only in your country.
  5. A national food. Invent a dish and say what's in it.
  6. 3 laws. At least one has to be silly. For example: "Everyone must wave hello to a tree."
  7. A national holiday. Give it a name and say what people do.
Then give your speech
  1. Gather your family. They are your visitors.
  2. Give a 1-minute welcome speech about your country. Show your flag and your map.
  3. Answer questions from your visitors.
  4. Draw a passport stamp for your country on a small piece of paper and give one to each visitor.

Can my child really play alone?

Many of these are made for exactly that. Every card says whether a grown-up is needed, and when. A few need a minute at the start or the end, and we say so up front.

What if my child gets stuck?

Each card has a tip or a hint. For the code games, the answers are hidden behind a tap so your child can try first.

What ages are these for?

Mostly ages 6 to 12. The ages are shown on every card, and you can filter by age at the top of the page.

Do we need to buy anything?

No. These use paper, pencils, tape, and things you already have at home. The Christmas hunt needs a small treat.
